The Case of

Part 2

7 Goals of the Butterfly Project:

1. To secure the release of the wrongfully convicted and detained who have not been given fair trials or who have been convicted based on false evidence or testimony.

2. To secure the release of those who have been given unfair sentences that don’t match the crime. Cruel and Unusual punishment is an amendment of our constitution and we believe many long term sentences being served today by our sisters and brothers constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.

3.  To upgrade the living conditions in all prisons to provide and reflect basic human conditions that we all deserve such as:  Air conditioning and heat, healthy food, clean bedding and towels and soft blankets.  In addition, we will provide therapeutic healing modalities and educational programs such as yoga, meditation, breathwork, functional anatomy, somatic therapy, etc.  Furthermore, we will provide access to online educational systems such as health courses, cooking, computer programming, beautician, hair styling, yoga certifications and much more. In order to do this we will provide all inmates with iPads/Tablets that will have intranet structures (no social media) that will be plugged into all of these education and therapeutic healing courses. By doing this we will empower everyone in prison and most of all upon release they will have the skills, confidence and calmness to reintegrate into our neighborhoods and be positive contributing members of our society.

4. To abolish all private prisons.  Prisons should never be privatized as a for profit businesses.  This only gives incentive for the owners of these prisons to reduce costs and overhead thereby reducing the basic needs that should be met.  In addition, private for profit prisons have zero incentive to release inmates or to provide education and therapeutic healing therapies to better these outmates' lives and help them parole and gain their freedom.

5. To provide safe havens/healing centers where former outmates could call home upon being released and be provided a nurturing space where they could heal from years of trauma through a myriad of therapeutic modalities and also learn new life skills to flourish and rebuild their lives.

This will empower everyone to make smooth transitions back into their family units, neighborhoods and society. With a wealthpool of wisdom from their collective experiences and with new tools to thrive we will have a new generation of mentors for our youth who will be a walking testimony of the power of transformation and healing.

6. To raise awareness of the cracks in our justice system and ultimately work together with the people and our government agencies to fix these cracks to mitigate any future incidents of false imprisonment or excessive, cruel and unusual punishment.

7. To put an immediate end to International Sex Trafficking.  We will fight tooth and nail to protect our women and children by “All and Any Means Necessary” from this heinous human act of defilement, which taints all of our souls.  By bringing attention to this cause we will amplify our voices to the ends of the earth.  Our duty as free human beings is to protect the innocent and helpless.

What does this say about us as a people?  As a nation? As humans?  Have we not failed our women and children?  That is a question we each have to answer for ourselves.

So I ask myself:

Have I done everything in my power and consciousness to protect these innocent woman and children?

And my answer to myself will be the same every time. No, I have not. I could do more. I could talk about it more. Educate myself more. I could donate my time and energy more freely. I could take more action in so many ways.
